Book at gov.uk. London is 25+ weeks. Grab any date you can — you can move it earlier later. A confirmed slot beats waiting for the perfect one.

Check gov.uk early morning, especially around 6am Monday when new dates load. Move your test forward whenever a nearer slot appears.

Choose test centres deliberately
Avoid the slowest London centres (Belvedere, Sidcup, Wood Green, Goodmayes, Enfield). Outer London (Pinner, Chertsey, Ilford, Borehamwood) and further out (Aylesbury, Oxford, Northampton) move faster. Biggest single lever: sit it outside central London.

Learning to drive

Sets the pace
Strategy: your booked practical date (Phase 3) sets the timeline, so aim your lessons to peak just before it. From zero, a base of regular lessons builds more durable, confident driving than a cold crash course; a short intensive block timed to the test is the best of both. Intensive only makes you faster if a real test date is attached, otherwise you peak early and go stale.

Spacing lessons over a few weeks builds more durable skill than cramming from zero, and you quickly learn how you take to it. An instructor can tell you after ~5-10 hours whether an intensive finish is realistic for you.

The cheapest, fastest accelerant. The supervising driver must be 21+ and have held a full licence 3+ years; you need learner insurance on the car and L-plates fitted.

Peak with a short intensive before the test
In the week or two before your booked date, ramp to 2-3 lessons a week or do a short intensive block, with mock tests. Go pure crash-course only if you're a quick study and it includes a real, near test date.
